John is an alcoholic writer who drinks to keep writing and writes to keep drinking. While studying for his MFA at Emerson College, he records his day-to-day existence in the city of Boston, writes about his experiences in workshops and dive bars, and reads literary biographies. Of the seven American-born writers awarded the Nobel Prize, five were alcoholics, and he follows their staggered footsteps into a cycle of recurring situations, volatile relationships, and similarly disturbing encounters that threatens to push him over the edge. He might be gathering a wealth of material for his autobiographical thesis—but will he survive to actually complete the program? Full of seedy sex scenes, rebellion, dysfunction, dark humor and self-destruction, MFA is a defining installment in the gritty genre of transgressive fiction. “Rapczynski does it again with MFA plunges us into the seedy underbelly—this time in the form of a young alcoholic whose drinking, sex life, and ambitions are equally promiscuous. In the tradition of Charles Bukowski, Jack Kerouac, and William Burroughs, in MFA the narrator rises above his narrative—sharp, witty, sad, and grimily real—so we can’t help but like and feel for him. Read it and weep.” —Elizabeth Inness-Brown, author of Burning Marguerite

MFA The Novel Jason Rapczynski Jennifer L Lassen 9781479145027 Books Reviews
First off, I need to say that I am not writer, nor a regular reader of fiction. My work requires me to spend most of my time creating charts, analyzing data and reading and editing poorly written works of non-fiction, so this review will probably differ a bit from the others on this book due to my lack of experience in this field. However, I felt compelled to write a review nonetheless because it is the first work of fiction that I've read cover-to-cover in some time. That, at least, should say something about the quality of this book.
John, the main character in MFA, leads a dangerous, irresponsible, lascivious, and drunken existence that many upstanding people like myself wish they could have lived themselves, at least for a little while. John is truly free and has few responsibilities. He--along with the hopelessly damaged cast of characters he surrounds himself with--does not care about the consequences of his actions. He spends most of his time fighting and screwing a myriad of damaged women, drinking for days straight, and living a pitiful hand to mouth existence. Oh yeah, he also attends graduate school, too. It's a life, I wish I could have led for a little while, but I, like most people are overly practical cowards, too afraid to live such an existence that could ultimately permanently damage our health, careers, and relationships. The closest I could ever come to living such a life like John's, is to read this book. It was a welcomed escape from this 30 something professional's ordinary everyday life. If you need a break from the ordinary, too, read MFA.
John, who's less than exciting name suggests that the darkness he personifies throughout the book may not be as unique as it may seem, embraces a series of self-discovering adventures he himself creates while on the path of completing his MFA. Just as the blending of the book and the degree bob between the semi manic, often bipolar mini planets of art and academia, so do John and his art surf under, than around, the waves of product itself vs creative producer. It presents, and than dissects, the idea of what happens when artist becomes the art itself. If John had not had the experiences that he did, whether those experiences were autobiographical or imagined, he would have nothing to write about. The authenticity of the cathartic, constructed, confession plunges the reader further into examining the idea of the necessity of experience, and it's validity, in artistic expression.
MFA is a post modern trek into the psyche of a hysterically dissatisfied and unapologetically phallocentirc, young and male writer. Upon an analysis of the book's mostly female characters the reader is left with a representation of women that is quite offensive. Women are mostly objectified, yet in perfect tricky contrast this generalization is redeemed by a few characters that symbolize non sexualized female power. With the white strength of Lorna's mother, who helps John trust again and the professional guidance of Maria, a very strong and wise female character in MFA, John (or Rapsczynski) balances out this misrepresentation, but the reader has to look hard.
MFA is a text for any critical or feminist theory college class. MFA is laced with just the right amount of references that span from Derrida to Vonnegut. MFA also has a graphic element that adds to the weaving of artistic compounding in a suggestive way. The graphic detail does not become overwhelming or distracting; it is the perfect amount of the added layer.
MFA is it's own analysis, criss crossing between text and life, art and artist; it's a satirical commentary on the ridiculousness of the mundane with soft sarcasm that any individual intelligently in tune with the way things work should find relatable. MFA has layers under layers of meaning, and these layers continuously unveil themselves.
START at the beginning, like a normal person- or Begin at any page. Wherever you open this book, you'll FALL IN. Just try, TRY to remain "you", in your chair or bed or bathroom.
MFA's dialogue ensnares YOUR mind and draws you into it's lifelike world of dangerous UNPREDICTABILITY. This unedited journey, depicting an age of formative adults, squirms through reality.
Through swamps of drugs, drama, sex, delusions, our protagonist struggles to maintain a decent family image and achieve "by the book" success.
MFA exposes all the embarrassing events from high school years, 20s or 30s that most have tried to forget. Reading MFA may dig up your own past and throw it in your face as a gift.
MFA teaches you that ugliness is s part of life; a brick EQUAL IN STRENGTH to milestones of success. By tearing off the bandage of shame, MFA gives you the gift of facing, recognizing, and ultimately appreciating a past that MAKES YOU who you are.
WARNING- this book just might make you a better person.
