Solo circumnavigation of the globe. Fewer than 300 sailors in history have accomplished it, less than the number of people who have climbed Mt. Everest, or even those who have gone to space. In 1990, Istvan Kopar set out to earn his place among this elite fraternity—and to do so with only one stop. If he were successful, he would realize a lifelong dream, and bring pride to his home country of Hungary in the process. Yet the risk of failure carried with it the possibility of dying alone in the middle of the vast sea. Over twenty years ago, Kopar first published the inspiring chronicle of his journey in his native Hungarian. All of his hopes, dreams, and fears coalesced into one word Kihivas—The Challenge. Now, Kihivas Alone at the Ends of the Earth brings this thrilling story to an English-speaking readership for the first time. Kopar recounts every element of his adventure, from custom-building his own 31-foot yacht, Salammbo, to battling the legendary waves of the Roaring Forties. His narrative is interspersed with proud descriptions of Hungary’s impressive maritime heritage, even as a landlocked country, and heartfelt portrayals of the memories that kept him going as he faced thousands of miles of lonely ocean. Experience a glimpse into the struggles, thrills, and insights known only to those who dare to pursue the greatest of challenges—alone at the ends of the earth.

Told in great detail, this life-changing adventure pitted an experienced sailor against the forces of nature and loneliness in a solo circumnavigation of the globe. Istvan's motivation seemed the drive to realize his potential and accomplish the nearly impossible, even though his family went through hardship and uncertainty. The lengthy preparations and many snafus with equipment and sustenance were interesting, and the technicalities of navigating and sailing solo probably meant more to those familiar with sailing. Journeys into the mind and emotions of Istvan brought immediacy to his experiences, an amazing push to extremes of human endurance. Repetitious days and recurring activities became somewhat boring, interspersed with extreme dangers which Istvan described matter-of-factly. An interesting glimpse into activities most of us will never experience.Product details

Kihivas Alone at the Ends of the Earth Istvan Kopar Robert Farrelly 9781517793630 Books Reviews
Mr. Kopar gives such a detailed account of his voyage you can truly imagine being there yourself. He decribes details such as smells, emotions and tactile senses that are missing from most other mariner adventures that you feel you have a real sense of what the journey was like. One does not need to be a sailor to enjoy this book. If you are a sailor though you will instantly see that his acomplishment is amazing.
My old teacher is the editor of this book, he recommended it to me and other past students. Since I loved him as a teacher and have always respected him very highly, I bought the book immediately. This is not ordinarily the type of story I would read, but I did and I couldn't put it down! I was pulled into the story and loved it, it ended too soon! I've been recommending it to others because I found it so interesting. I highly recommend this book to anyone and if the genre makes you hesitant, don't let that throw you off because if I did I would've missed out on an incredible story.
The adventure of a lifetime - a solo circumnavigation - that consequently changed a man's life but not his dreams of sailing the seven oceans alone! Coming from landlocked Hungary when it still was a Communist country behind the infamous Iron Curtain Istavan Kopar found his own course to the ultimate freedom by sailing around the world singlehanded following the most challenging route through the Roaring Forties and Screaming Fifties of the Southern Oceans. His account of the epic voyage is a thrilling document which gives the reader a chance to really comprehend and appreciate the enormous achievement of successfully finishing a seemingly impossible project that required an incredible amount of physical and mental strenght to overcome all the difficulties and obstacles - from the very first beginning when the 31 ft sailboat had to be transported from Hungary to the starting point at Pula in what is now Croatia, then still Yugoslavia. The log book entries along with the narrative passages of the book picture vividly the various highs and lows, storms and a knockdown not only weatherwise but also in terms of the psychological and physical status of the lone sailor as he is battling the unforgiving forces of the Southern Ocean. The interested reader finds a load of valuable information on sailing details as well as on the boat's equipment and provisions for such an adventure. With the general technical progress during the last 25 years in mind and also considering the limited resources which Istvan Kopar had to start out all by himself one cannot fail to admire the successfully finished circumnavigation. The author is planning to participate in a singlehanded race around the globe in 2018. Hopefully there will be another book coming after this circumnavigation - which should be the third one for Captain Kopar - once again!
I was so impressed with the depth and breadth of this journey. It was awe inspiring. Kopar not only constructed his own boat but kept it in constant repair. He has such great strength of character. Enjoyed his love of his family, his friends and his country; also his choice of books and music to feel him going. He was incredibly resourceful. It made me appreciate the explorers of old in a new way. Reading about his trip was exciting and suspenseful. It often reminded me of "The Perfect Storm" and the book about the rowing team at the 1936 Olympics. I love the beach but you get an entirely different perspective when you are offshore. The ocean is so vast and this book gives you such an appreciation for it. Kopar is incredibly brave and determined! The book was very well written and the pictures added to the enjoyment of the story.
I love books that take the reader on a journey but usually stick to reading fictional adventures rather than non-fiction but this remarkable tale of heroic achievement didn’t disappoint. In fact, this is a very exciting book that takes the reader around the world in a one-person sailboat. First, the writer describes his maritime past and his future dreams about circumnavigating the globe. For a young man living in a land-locked country his far-fetched ideas sound remarkable to everyone he meets until he constructs his own boat, the Salammbo. After some evening practice sails on Lake Balaton, Istvan sets his course toward Gibraltar, the official beginning of a long, arduous voyage across the Seven Seas. Besides the obvious coordinates and entries into his Captain’s log, are the emotional and physically grueling challenges thrown upon him during immense storms. Storms that tested his courage, determination and his mettle while making him question his sanity. The sensitive addition of reading material, bird-watching, radio chatter with friends and family had entertained Istvan on board, while the waves tossed the vessel through the Indian Ocean and Pacific. Careening through the Roaring Forties and Furious Fifties, Salammbo took a beating from giant swells, ice and incredible heat. By the time he reached the Trade Winds on his way home, he had pulled me into his story so deeply that I myself felt slightly exhausted. KIHIVAS-Alone at the Ends of the Earth is an incredible, true story of one man’s solitary triumph and an inspiration for all who set their sights on dreams that sound impossible.
